The Flint School of Performing Arts offers a full range of dance classes including classical ballet, ballroom, hip hop and modern technique. Courses range from beginner levels to professional. Students are grouped by levels of progress in dance rather than grade level and will advance based on the student’s progress.

Ballet classes are available at Pre-ballet, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels.

Pre-Ballet  ages 6-7

Introduce your child to the principles of movement, preparing them for the wonderful world of dance. Students learn the joy of self-expression and at the same time develop strength, flexibility and command of the body. Pre-Ballet students also have fun performing in the Dance Lecture Demonstration at the end of the school year.

Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced Ballet  ages 7-adult

These classes form the foundation important to any dance student. With the help of dedicated and caring faculty, students develop strength, line, expression and technique as required in classical ballet and modern dance. Strength is the energy and endurance required by the dancer’s muscles to execute movement. Line is the shape of the body and its muscles which creates beauty and style. Expression is the ability of a dancer to communicate feelings through movement. Technique is the dancer’s vocabulary and knowledge of how to use the mind to move the body.

The elements of a good dancer are gradually built over a period of years by moving through a series of well-planned exercises. These begin with simple movements once a week. As the muscles mature, the amount of time devoted to exercises must increase and become more complex. This is why the number of classes and days per week increase as the dancer moves through levels of the program. As the dancer’s abilities develop, so do the opportunities to perform.

Building strength, line, expressiveness and technique not only demand a great deal of effort, discipline and time, but a program of the highest professional quality. The Dance Division Classical Ballet Curriculum and the Modern Dance Curriculum have been carefully constructed and include written observation forms, giving students the best opportunity for success.
